I can do it by myself is a lie—don’t believe it!

Have you ever felt you knew exactly where you wanted to go—but just didn’t know how to get there? You may need coaching.

The myth…

It’s ingrained in our culture: The “self-made” success! The lone champion!

The belief that achievement is best if done alone is a dangerous lie—and it’s probably hurting you!

Admittedly, we admire the achievements of music and movie stars and top athletes—those that have risen to the top of their professions. On the outside, it looks like they found success and recognition on their own. On the inside—that couldn’t be further from the truth.

And the award goes to…

Remember last Oscar night? Each winner produced a list of those they wanted to thank—and ran out of time before finishing. The same goes for any award night on television.

This isn’t to discount the individual performer—each of those stars brings an enormous amount of talent and determination. But lesser known is the fact that each star performer has entire staffs of people helping them succeed.

There are managers, agents, lawyers, financial advisors, nutritionists, physical conditioning experts, vocal and acting teachers, dance and movement instructors, spiritual and mental guides, stylists and public relations professionals… and the list goes on and on.

Most all of them would consider themselves personal coaches.

Head coaches and more

Top athletes need coachesWe’re more aware that top athletes have coaches. We see the coaches pacing back and forth, shouting from the sidelines—but we’re not as aware of the additional coaches and staff that surround each professional athlete.

Much like a star performance artist, professional athletes have coaches for almost every aspect of their lives.

Achieving the impossible

Lesser known is that top business executives and elite sales people also have coaches. Key to their success is the awareness that to be a top performer or top producer they need objective perspective and help.

Coaches are key to success Just like stars from the performing world or sports arena, top business and sales professionals know that having a coach is all about having someone to believe in them and to encourage them—about seeing things—and themselves—from new perspectives and setting their sights on new horizons.

They know that if you want to achieve the impossible, you need the success that comes from accountability through coaching. In fact, they know if you want to succeed quickly, allow a coach to hold you accountable.

The universal need for coaches

personal coachingAs Tom Landry, one of the greatest and most innovative coaches in NFL history said, “A coach is someone who tells you what you don’t want to hear, who has you see what you don’t want to see—so you can be who you always knew you can be.”

Most all of us want to succeed at something meaningful. It might be a public achievement, or it might be something personal and private. Most of us know that to succeed we need to learn and grow, exercise discipline and commitment, and focus on outcomes. In fact, most of us enjoy that sort of focus and effort.

What’s less enjoyable is being corrected and taught by someone else. It takes vulnerability and humility. It takes wanting to grow and succeed more than always wanting to feel good about yourself.

But what stars, athletes, and CEOs know is that without that perspective and motivation, making it to the top is impossible.

Coaching for productivity

At PlanPlus Online, as we work daily with individuals and organizations, we’ve noticed the almost universal need for productivity coaching. This isn’t to simply promote our productivity platform—PlanPlus Online is a means, not an end. It’s a tool used in the pursuit of productivity.

As Charles Duhigg writes, “Productivity isn’t about working more or sweating harder. It’s not simply a product of spending longer hours at your desk or making bigger sacrifices. Rather, productivity is about making certain choices in certain ways. The way we choose to see ourselves and frame daily decisions; the stories we tell ourselves, and the easy goals we ignore; the sense of community we build among teammates; the creative cultures we establish as leaders; These are the things that separate the merely busy from the genuinely productive.”
